Edgar Degas (1834-1917)

Degas along with other impressionist artists displayed their work in independent exhibitions in which they showed their work. He had a unique style that would cause him to stand out from the other impressionists. He produced a vast collections of art works, hundreds of paintings and thousands of drawings and prints.

He also had a passion for art collecting. He had set up a private museum in his apartment in Paris. He had collected masterpieces by such artists as J.A.D. Ingres, Eugène Delacroix and Honoré Daumier. He also collected the works of his fellow impressionists such as Edouard Manet, Paul Cezanne and post impressionist Paul Gauguin. His collection consisted of one thousand paintings and drawings and four thousand prints.

His dream of a public museum to house the collection was never realized. After his death in 1917 his collection was uncovered and sold at auction.
