Abstract Art or Abstract Expressionism came to prominence in New York City in the 1940's and 1950's. It was known as the first American painting style to break away from the influence of European artistic styles. It is also called action painting as well as the New York school and would soon influence artistic expression abroad as the artistic center of the world moves from Paris to New York. It would be known for its lacking of a recognizable subject matter.
This art form would come to represent an extensive range of styles in a mostly nonrepresentational framework. Some of the hallmarks of this art form were attention focused on surface qualities employing large canvases, the use of space emphasizing all areas of the canvas to create the work, as well as the portraying emotion on canvas.
Artists of this style include Hans Hofmann and Robert Motherwell, Philip Guston and Franz Kline Kooning, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko
